At a self-service car wash, a sensible basic order is: pre-wash thoroughly, use foam if needed, loosen the remaining dirt with clean wash equipment, rinse completely and finish with the designated final-rinse programme. The key is to remove as much dirt as possible before touching the paint. Programme names and procedures vary between facilities.
Before you start: what are the site rules?
Read the programme board and the operator’s instructions. Personal buckets, mitts and cleaners are not permitted everywhere. If you want to hand-wash with your own equipment, choose a facility that allows it. Do not modify the equipment or add cleaners to its systems.
Position the vehicle appropriately, close the windows and switch off automatic wipers. Allow hot surfaces to cool first. In freezing conditions, an open wash bay without safe, frost-free conditions is unsuitable. Read Washing a car in winter for further guidance.
The sequence, step by step
- Pre-wash: Remove loose particles, sand and heavy dirt with the designated programme. Keep the lance moving, maintain the specified distance and do not direct the jet at damaged paint, seals or sensitive components.
- Foam or pre-wash programme: If available, it can loosen adhering dirt. Observe the facility’s dwell-time instructions and do not allow products to dry. Rinse thoroughly before the contact wash where the programme requires it.
- Contact wash: Use a permitted, clean mitt or a carefully inspected brush. Start at the top and leave heavily soiled lower areas until last. Use plenty of wash solution and very little pressure.
- Rinse thoroughly: Completely remove shampoo, foam and loosened dirt. Do not forget edges and areas around the mirrors.
- Optional protection programme: Only select it if it suits your vehicle and any existing coatings. It does not replace the specific preparation required before applying new paint protection.
- Final rinse: Use the designated final-rinse programme. Water quality and results vary between facilities.
- Dry: After thorough cleaning, absorb remaining water with a clean drying towel. Move to a designated car-care area if necessary.
Can you skip the contact wash?
A good pre-wash removes a lot of dirt, but a thin traffic film can remain on the paint. A touchless rinse can serve as a quick interim clean; do not then rub off the remaining film with a drying towel.
For a thorough clean, follow with a suitable contact wash. Hand washing with your own Wash & Snow Foam and wash mitt is an option if the operator permits it. For the complete process, see How to wash your car.
How safe is the wash brush?
Inspect the bristles, head and any cover for sand and foreign particles. A brush previously used on heavily soiled wheels is a poor starting point for paintwork. If you cannot clean it sufficiently, avoid contact.
A clean cover reduces direct bristle contact, but collects dirt itself and needs rinsing during use. Do not use it on wheel arches and wheels before moving to the paint. In How to use a wash brush cover we explain fitting it and deciding when to change it.
What does a spot-free rinse do?
A programme labelled as a spot-free or reverse-osmosis rinse can reduce residues left by the rinse water. Its actual effect depends on the facility and water quality. It does not remove remaining traffic film or guarantee a spot-free result around every edge.
For water remaining around mirrors and trim, and safe towel use, see Drying a car without water spots. Rinse thoroughly rather than trying to compensate for a skipped cleaning step with prolonged wiping.
Frequently asked questions
Should I rinse off the foam before using the brush?
That depends on the programme and facility. Do not assume a pre-wash cleaner is suitable as a contact-wash solution; follow the intended process and remove loosened coarse particles before contact.
Can I use my own shampoo?
Only if the operator allows it. Use a designated washing area and do not add it to the facility’s tanks.
Is a spot-free rinse enough for drying?
It can reduce water spots, but does not guarantee a dry, residue-free car everywhere. Once the paint is completely clean, absorb remaining water with a suitable towel.
Can I wipe the car dry after a quick pre-wash?
Not if traffic film remains. A drying towel is intended for water remaining after thorough cleaning.
